Wood Sculpture 2

I've started on my next 3D pice. It should be fun. I've had more wooden strips cut, but smaller than the previous ones so this sculpture should be more precise and intricate. We'll see how it goes i suppose.

*Edit*
Here are some recent photos of the second crane. I'm not entirely sure if it's finished yet, but i like how it looks anyway. Zoom in for a better look.

P.S. Ignore all of Keiths crappy work up on the wall there too. Just try not to let it upset you anyway..

Print

Went back to woodblock print on Monday and Tuesday this week to add a second colour onto some of my old prints. I printed up a few reddish colour from the woodblock first before cutting back into it to add a second colour onto the older prints. They turned out quite well too.

Above we can see examples of the 2 colour reduction prints as well as the single coklpur prints from the new woodblock started.

In this picture i've printed with 3 colours. First a rusted/red colour. Then a dark grey and finally a strong black.

Here's the 3 colour reduction with a much brighter red.

In this photo we can see the 2 colour prints together with the 3 colour ones.

Finally we have a close up of the new woodblock print seern in the first image.

Shadows

Using a projector, I shone light through my wood crane sculpture onto large white pages onj a wall in order to copy the shadows created. I did some on A1 size paper to see how it would look and I liked the effect so I got a much larger sheet from the technichians (around 5ft x 6ft) and painted the shadows on very carefully with thick black paint.

ps. This post was supposed to be up last week, but for some reason it never posted, just saved into the draft posts folder...

We can see from this image the size of the page required for this projection.

The crane had to be placed pretty damn close to the wall to keep the shadow from distorting.

Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force! Go!
(Attempting to confirm my suspicions that nobody reads these things)

Here are the final pieces created from painting over the shadows.
The above images are painted on standard A1 sized cartridge paper. Just to test the
method without wasting higher quality materials.

Next I tried some think cradboard sheets. This worked much better than the paper
because it help the paint better and didn't buckle at all.

Finally I used the Think White Paper from the roll. This worked best of all.
The image came out much cleaner and sharper and the scale was much more impressive than the abstract-esque effect from the other smaller pieces.

Stop Motion 2

I did a second stop motion video based on a much smaller, simpler version of the crane just made from 2 pieces of wood. This was done in the same way as the first video, without a tripod, but it is done more crudely and imperfectly.

Stop Motion Animation

Finished my stop motion animation based on the photos from the crane construction. Was quite simple, just used windows movie maker. I didn't want to do it the traditional way by using a tripod and taking each photo very carefully from the exact same position. I thought it would be more interesting and in keeping with the style of the sculpture to take the photos in a more organic way by simply returning to roughly the same position to take each photo. This imperfect method will be evident throughout the video.

Wooden Crane Piece

Started on a large scale 3D piece on Monday. Got a load of square-cut lengths of wood made up ranging from 150mm to 1metre. And then just got out a glue gun and just started putting it together. I wanted to create a piece that had no plan or layout design worked out beforehand because i felt it would be more fitting with my theme of remnants of the economic boom.

I wanted to be able to just add pieces to the crane as they were required without having to worry about sticking to a set pattern. In other words, if the crane started leaning one direction or was weakening in places, i would just add pieces where required.

I photographed the crane after each piece added to have a complete record of the development. But because the photos were all from a relatively similar position, i'm thinking of also making a short stop motion animation film too.

Woodblock

Carved out some woodblock prints last week and printed them on friday. Gonna go collect em today and see how they turned out. I had problems getting the ink to spread evenly on the block and in the end, i lost some of the detail on the final prints because of over-inking.
Printed out some colour images too and i'm going to carve back into the woodblock and print over them for a 2 colour image.

3D continued

Got my steel piece made up the other day. Worked out well. The piece is quite solid and heavy. Don't have a photo of it at the moment, but i'll get around to it... probly. Gonna explore other materials and techniques for creating the different sections of the crane this week. Also want to do some quick sketches of the metal pice itself. I want to explore it from different sides and angles and represent it in different ways on a 2-Dimensional plane.

PS. What's up with the time on these past posts? Don't worry, i wasn't sittin up typin these up in the middle of the night or at half 8 in the morning...

Circling the crane...

Went out around the parkway/TK Maxx area again today sketching the cranes from different sides all around. Mainly wanted to work out the scale of the different sections of the crane to help draw up a quick design plan for a 3D piece. Hopefully gonna start constructing it tomorry from steel.

PhotoShoppin'

Well howsegoin. Photoshopped something up there the other day, but the computer won't let me upload it for some stupid reason... But, if ye care enough, ye can see it here.

Urban Environment

Exploring cranes and construction for my Urban environment project. Mainly focusing on ink this week. Nice medium to use, simplistic and not too much hassle.
